Team GB - Simon Lawson

Simon is a wheelchair racer who picked up the sport after tragically breaking his spine at the age of 19 and becoming paralysed. Simon is now a T53 wheelchair road racer for Team Great Britain. His injury hasn’t dwindled his love for sport or his infectious personality. Simon likes to see the positive side of life and uses all the adversity he has faced in life to inspire others to never give up and to take on new challenges. He is heavily involved with a number of schools across the UK where he has been a motivational speaker to children.

We managed to have a chat with Simon and get to know him a little better.

What is your biggest sporting accomplishment?

That’s a tough question. Winning a bronze medal in the 2018 Commonwealth Games marathon is up there, but I’m also really proud of holding the British marathon record too.

Do you have any words of advice to aspiring athletes?

Enjoy yourself and don’t get too caught up in what other athletes are doing! Focus on your own goals and your own plan.

What is something interesting about you that few people know?

I used to race motocross before being injured and now as a wheelchair user I still have a motocross bike and ride for fun.

If you weren’t an athlete what would you be?

A mechanic.

Do you have an interesting/crazy story related to your sporting career?

Probably the craziest thing that occurred to me happened during the Berlin Marathon in 2015. I was in the lead and I hit some tram lines in the road and had a big crash. I fell over, busted up my race chair a good bit, and skinned my arm pretty bad. However, I remounted and still managed to finish 5th.
