Many people may recognize Mariel Zagunis for her bright smile and reminisce about her carrying the United States Flag during the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Olympic games. People may not know that Mariel has won every title fencing has to offer and is also an outstanding member of her community. It is for these reasons that Mariel is my ultimate Athlete CRUSH.
Mariel grew up in Beaverton, Oregon where she began fencing at age 10. She quickly rose through the ranks of the fencing world and at age 19, competed at the 2004 Athens Olympics. It was here that Mariel shocked the world, by becoming the first American fencer in 100 years to take home an Olympic gold. After returning home, Mariel was instrumental in Notre Dame’s NCAA title win in 2005 and was the individual NCAA champion in 2006. These Skills are a big reason why I love to follow Mariel and watch her compete. Now aged 31 and with three Olympics under her belt, Mariel is well prepared to compete in Rio De Janerio this upcoming summer and is heavily favored to medal at the event.
Thank your much again to @specialolympics Oregon and @nike for such a fun time at the Youth Games yesterday! So inspiring to meet these young athletes, a great time had by all! #SpecialOlympics #YouthGames #betterforit #JustDoIt #Nike #Olympians #athlete #kids #Oregon #Portland #WHQ #TrainingForLife #TeamUSA @teamusa
In addition to being a phenomenal athlete, Mariel has worked with the Special Olympics Youth Games and The Sunshine Pantry, a local food bank that she has been supporting for many years. She volunteers her time at the food bank and assists with resources to help out the less fortunate. Mariel is a perfect Role Model for young athletes and is living proof that we can make the world a better place through sport.
