Russell Westbrook: A Thunderous Persona

Russell Westbrook’s ability to fill up the stat sheet is unmatched by any other player at the point guard position. His motor as a competitor just never seems to stop. As a playmaker and facilitator, he always looks to get his teammates involved, yet he is not afraid to take matters into his own hands down the stretch. From pull-up jump shots to blitzing to the rim, Westbrook is a man on a mission with the goal of beating every player on the court to the basket.

The Oklahoma City Thunder superstar is my Athlete CRUSH for the Skill he exhibits. Aside from scoring and passing, Westbrook can grab more rebounds than even the biggest players on the court, to go along with his aggressive defense. Playing with a reckless abandon does yield turnovers and allow opponents easier shots by gambling on passes, but he makes up for his risky play through his pure athleticism and strong demeanor. The video below is a perfect example of how his style of play pays off.

Westbrook is often involved in fastbreaks, not just on offense, but also on defense – he will do anything to help his team. In some instances, when he has been the farthest from an opposing player eyeing a breakaway dunk, Westbrook has been known to turn on the jets to meet the opposition at the rim. He displays an ability to run the court at full speed, defend against the league’s best scorers, and is still able to exert equal amounts of energy at the offensive end. His skill has improved each year of his professional career, but this past 2015-2016 season makes it hard to imagine how he could possibly improve any more.

From fashion to the court, confidence has never been an issue for Westbrook. His tenacity remained at full force after it became apparent he would not be further acknowledged for his regular season performance with an MVP trophy. Westbrook’s high level of self-esteem is evident in his style of clothing, which is one of many attributes that make up his expressive Character. He will not be bothered by critics and certainly will not be subdued by opposing taunts on the court.

His sense of style is in tune with the message behind his Why Not? Foundation. Growing up in Hawthorne, on the southwestern side of Los Angeles County, California, Westbrook and his younger brother were taught to ask “why not?” when faced with adversity. This simple question allowed Westbrook to continue playing the game he lives for, despite being an undersized 5’8” point guard for the majority of his high school days. Today, the Why Not? Foundation pushes children to combat their challenges by making Westbrook’s mantra their own. Why Not? provides various programs and necessities to children, such as access to books, meals, and holiday events. Westbrook’s tenacious drive paid off outside of basketball, as he earned the 2014-15 NBA Cares Community Assist Award. When playing, Westbrook puts in 100% effort on every possession and does not hesitate to sacrifice his body for the good of the team. His unselfish nature holds true away from basketball as well and is something to be admired. The perseverance to succeed and point guard instinct that he demonstrates off the court are more than enough to qualify him as Athlete CRUSH worthy.
